Job Description:

LTE - Waterfowl Quantitative Scientist

The Office of Applied Science within the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hiring a Research Scientist to work within the Waterfowl and Wetland Research Program. This a dual appointment Limited Term Employee position and funding is available for at least two years. The DNR seeks to hire this position in tandem with the LTE - Waterfowl Habitat Research Scientist position. Qualified candidates should apply for both positions.

The successful applicant will work directly with the Waterfowl and Migratory Game Bird Research Scientist to organize data from multiple projects and both collaboratively and independently develop and conduct appropriate statistical analyses for diverse waterfowl data. Additional duties will include coordinating and managing seasonal data collection for waterfowl research projects for Wisconsin DNR. The position will be based out of Madison, Wisconsin and will begin on May 9, 2021. Well-qualified candidates may be eligible for a later start date.

65% - Data Summary and Analysis
- Conduct survival analyses using dead-recovery models from banded waterfowl data
- Use generalized linear mixed models to model breeding pair abundance data
- Conduct nest survival analyses
- Analyze aerial survey monitoring data for annual reports

30% - Coordinate and Manage Data Collection
- Manage and coordinate seasonal field data collection and field technician assignments
- Collect data in the field
- Create and manage databases

5% - Other duties as assigned

Knowledge Required:

Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of waterfowl ecology
- Strong data management skills
- Quantitative analytical experience
- Previous experience with frequentist and Bayesian approaches used to analyze band-recovery data as well as nest survival using program MARK and JAGS
- Experience conducting generalized linear mixed models
- Ability to work independently as well as on a team

Preferred Qualifications:
- Possess a M.S. degree in wildlife or a related field and experience with project management, and peer-reviewed manuscript preparation
- Experience building integrated population models
