LTE - Fisheries Technician
The Fisheries Technician - Creel Survey Clerk will assist in the Creel Survey program. This position will collect fish information on designated waters, measure, weigh, and identify fish caught, interview anglers, and record data. Additionally, this position will compile information, analyze data, and prepare written documentation and/or reports for the program. This position will require some evening work and will require working all weekends and holidays. Candidates must be able to work through October 31st.
70% - Independently or under general supervision perform creel survey clerk duties and collect fish information on designated waters. Measure, weigh, and identify fish caught; Interview anglers and Record data.
20% - Compile and analyze data and prepare written documentation and/or reports.
10% - Lead other LTE Fisheries Technicians performing creel survey duties. Assist with other fisheries sampling as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- Able to accurately identify common Lake Michigan fish to species name. - Excellent oral and written communication skills. - Able to work independently with limited supervision. - Able to approach anglers where they commonly fish - this includes piers and breakwaters, rocky shorelines, open sand, cobble beaches, and along streams and rivers over uneven terrain. - Able and willing to work in inclement weather. - Able and willing to work early morning and late evening hours according to an irregular assigned schedule.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completed fisheries coursework in a higher education facility
- Experience either volunteering or working in fisheries
- Experience with data entry and analyses in Excel and Access.
