Job Description:

LTE - Fisheries Technician

These positions are responsible for assisting the biologist/technician on all aspects of fisheries surveys for Lake Superior and associated tributary streams or Inland waters of Ashland and Iron County. Activities would include deployment of a variety of assessment gear and collection of biological data on target fish species, and accurately tabulate, enter, and summarize biological data. These positions will require working outside in potential inclement weather conditions.

65% - Conduct multiple assessments in different geographic areas simultaneously. Act as crew leader for other LTEs when independently conducting electrofishing, fyke net, gill net, and seining surveys. Determine the appropriate areas to deploy gear, operates and retrieves gear and is responsible for collection of appropriate biological data as directed by the fisheries technician or biologist. Assist with data tabulation and summarization as directed.

30% - As directed, independently construct and/or maintain equipment, assist with age interpretation of a variety of structures for different fish species, make preliminary investigations and report to biologist, assist other fisheries biologists in the region

5% - Other duties as assigned

Knowledge Required:

Required Qualifications:
- Able to accurately identify common species of Wisconsin fish.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Able to work independently with limited supervision.
- Able and willing to work in inclement weather.
- Able and willing to work early morning and late evening hours according to an assigned schedule.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Completed fisheries coursework in an institution of higher learning
- Have prior volunteer or work experience in fisheries.
- Experience with data entry and analyses in Excel and Access.
