Job Description:

LTE - Fisheries Technician - Adv

This position provides fish rearing support for the Department's Fish Culture Section in the Division of Fish Wildlife and Parks Fish Culture Section. The position is required to assist our staff veterinarians with all duties needed to stock healthy fish from Department hatcheries and to sample wild fish populations to learn about their health status.

70% - Veterinary Assistant Tasks
- Schedule the sampling of the Department's aquaculture facilities to facilitate the production of valid fish health certificates that allow the stocking of fish into waters of the state
- Aid in the scheduling of broodstock sampling, ovarian fluid collection, and wild fish health events
- Assist veterinarian(s) with packing of equipment and the collection of biological specimens
- Prepare, pack, and ship/deliver sampling equipment to staff statewide as needed
- Coordinate the shipment of samples to laboratory contractors for analyses
- Assist in coordinating the Investigational New Animal Drug Program
- Perform routine lab duties including inventory, re-stocking of supplies, cleaning, equipment maintenance, invoice payment
- Coordinate the collection and dissemination of results from laboratory contractors to fish health veterinarians, hatchery, and bureau staff to facilitate the decision process to stock fish into waters of the state

15% - Data Management
- Archive laboratory results in paper and electronic forms to facilitate the review of fish health cases, production of FHCs, and decisions on fish stocking
- Review cases for completeness
- Assist in data entry for the Investigational New Animal Drug Program
- Organize case logs and fish health files (electronically)
- Maintain photo archive
- Assist with the development of a database for fish health records from 1980-present

15% - Rounds
- Participate in monthly journal and disease topic rounds

Knowledge Required:

Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of general science, such as biology, chemistry or microbiology.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel and Word
- General knowledge of laboratory procedures, techniques and equipment

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a laboratory or fish hatchery
- Excellent organization skills
- Excellent communication skills
