LTE - Fisheries Technician - Adv
This Fisheries Technician will be stationed at the WDNR Plymouth Service Center, located in Plymouth, WI. Lead-worker mentoring/training will be provided by the Plymouth Fisheries Technician-Advanced. Job duties include identifying, measuring, and counting fish species. The Fisheries Technician will assist in stream and lake survey projects, including fyke netting and electrofishing. Additional duties include collecting, reading and analyzing fish structures such as spines, scales and otoliths for age and growth determinations and entering fisheries data into spreadsheets and database programs. The position will also be responsible for operating and maintaining trucks, trailers, boats, and outboard motors. Some evening and weekend work will be required for this position.
60% - Conduct fisheries assessments in lakes and streams throughout the work unit. With proper training and as directed, conduct electrofishing, fyke net and seining surveys. Determine the appropriate areas to deploy, operate and retrieve gear. Collect appropriate biological data as directed by the assigned fisheries technician or biologist.
25% - Process aging materials, enter data into statewide database, compile and analyze data, prepare written documentation or reports.
15% - With proper training and as directed, independently construct or maintain equipment. Assist with land management activities, as needed. Other duties, as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of fishery survey methods.
- Ability to conduct fieldwork with minimal supervision, and under a variety of conditions (including inclement weather).
- Knowledge and skills relating to the taxonomy and identification of Wisconsin fishes.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and use of e-mail.
Ability to work some evening and weekend work
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience operating trucks, boats and trailers.
