Job Description:

LTE - Fisheries Technician

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is hiring a Fisheries Technician to help with monitoring the commercial fishing industry on Lake Michigan. This will be a 6 month full-time position located at the Sturgeon Bay Service Center. The position will involve working closely with the commercial fishing industry to monitor by-catch and accurately record mortality rates of fish discarded.

50% - Monitor and collect data on commercial fishing catch in Green Bay, Lake Michigan. Work cooperatively on commercial fishing vessels to quantify the catch and bycatch information reported by commercial fishers lifting gill nets and trap nets. Duties include identify species and count commercially caught lake whitefish and other species (bycatch), collect biological information on fish species, enter and maintain a catch database for the project.

30% - Work with other staff in the deployment of electrofishing gear, fyke nets, and gill nets, seines in streams and lakes, and Lake Michigan. This work will involve following standard protocols for fisheries management.

20% - Work at Lake Michigan salmonid collection weirs, assist with the collection of bio-data and samples for detection of Coded Wire Tags. Maintenance of gear such as fyke nets, gill nets, boats, outboards, trailers and other survey gear. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Required:

Required Qualifications:
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public
- Willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather on commercial fishing boats
- Willingness to work a variable schedule (including all weekends)
- Ability to work independently, be self-motivated and punctual

Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to identify common Lake Michigan fish species
- Ability to record required data accurately
