Job Description: Forest Health Lab Assistant - LTE

The Forest Health Lab Assistant works closely with the State Forest Pathologist and Forest Health Team to diagnose pathogens from submitted samples. This position also helps conduct field surveys and assists with lab management and administrative tasks.

50% Assist the state forest pathologist with the diagnosis of forest pathogens (i.e. Leptographium spp, Heterobasidion irregulare, Bretziella fagacearum) from field samples. Prepare culture plates, perform molecular tests using PCR, track lab samples from start to finish, and report results.

20% Collaborate with the state nursery on seedling quality projects (i.e. Diplodia asymptomatic infection test, jack pine gall rust survey). Process samples, complete examinations, and submit final reports.

10% Maintain a safe, clean and functional lab. Place orders for chemicals and lab supplies as needed.

10% Assist the state forest pathologist on miscellaneous administrative tasks.

10% Assist with field surveys of various forest pests.

Knowledge Required:

Applicants must have general knowledge of forest pathology, a basic understanding of culture work, molecular diagnostics, a desire and interest in learning forest health issues, and computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Paint, Access). Ability to work in a team setting as well as independently, and work in outdoor conditions, sometimes adverse. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, agency partners and public.

Applicants must possess a valid driver's license in order to operate a state vehicle. This position requires the ability to travel up to 300 miles daily. Preferred work hours are 7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. M-F (40 hours/week).

Preferred knowledge/skills include course work/work experience in: culture work, molecular diagnostic techniques, examining lab samples through microscopes, diagnosing forest pest problems, and identifying insects.
