Job Description: Assistant Naturalist Guide - LTE

This position will provide interpretive programming and services at Rock Island State Park. This position is part-time and requires some night, weekend and holiday work. ***NOTE*** This position is located on an Island off of Washington Island which is accessible by ferry only.

70% Plan and conduct property interpretive and environmental education programs for park visitors using a variety of presentation methods and techniques. Interpret the natural and cultural resources of the property and the area, teach outdoor skills, and promote resource stewardship. Greet visitors at the Contact Station, dock and boathouse, answer questions and respond to nature-related inquiries, assist with fee collection and provide general park information to visitors.

20% Market and promote interpretive and educational programs for the park through promotional materials, media relations and other outreach methods. Develop and prepare informational displays and messaging for key management issues. Plan, develop and evaluate publications, multi-media presentations, displays, program aids, exhibits and other non-personal services.

5% Provide information to the public regarding invasive species identification and control methods / techniques. Locate and identify invasive species on the park properties. Work with volunteers and assist with special events.

5% Keep and maintain accurate records and reports relating to interpretive services provided.

Knowledge Required:

Required Qualifications:
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Basic knowledge of environmental concepts, natural resources, ecology, biology / life sciences, geology / earth sciences, invasive species.
- Basic knowledge of the local flora, fauna, and human history.
- Operation of a personal computer and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree or coursework in natural sciences, education, or a related field.
- Experience researching, planning, and conducting interpretive and educational programs.
- Ability to utilize a variety of presentation techniques and relate to a diverse audience.
