Job Description: Forestry Technician - LTE

The Wisconsin DNR will be hiring a forestry technician within the Division of Forestry, Forest Economics and Ecology Section. The applicant hired for this position will work on a variety of research projects including studies of efficacy of prescribed fire in reducing brush, and oak wilt containment methods, but the focus will be on reconstructing historical fire regimes including the seasonality, frequency, and causes of fires. Work will include plant identification, plot establishment and measurements, collecting tree cores, and using a chainsaw. The position will be based out of the Madison DNR Science Operations Center on Madison's east side, but will require extensive travel. Independent travel in state vehicles is required so the successful candidate must possess a valid driver's license. Applicants must be able and willing to work in variable conditions including inclement weather.

A2. Field measurements including tree species identification
A3. Collecting tree cores and partial sections with increment borers and chainsaws
A4. Maintenance of field equipment
A5. Extensive chainsaw work in remote field settings

B1. Surfacing tree cores and partial sections
B2. Crossdating and assigning annual dates to rings and injuries

20% C. Enter and review field data
C1. Enter field and laboratory data
C2. Maintain dendrochronology database
C3. Perform routine checks of data quality

Knowledge Required:

A well-qualified applicant would have interest in Forest and/or Fire Ecology. Applicants should have some experience in plant identification and using plant identification guides to identify unknown species. Ideal applicants will have experience running a chainsaw and other power equipment (e.g. sanders, planers, saws) and have chainsaw safety certification. Applicants will be expected to work independently and have experience with Excel and basic Windows programs.
