Job Description: Assistant Naturalist Guide - LTE

The position will provide interpretive programming and services at both Potawatomi and Whitefish Dunes State Parks in Door County.

70% Plan and conduct property interpretive and environmental education programs for park visitors using a variety of presentation methods and techniques. Interpret the natural and cultural resources of the property and the area, teach outdoor skills, and promote resource stewardship. Greet visitors at the Park Office and Nature Center, answer questions and respond to nature-related inquiries, assist with fee collection and provide general park information to visitors.

20% Market and promote interpretive and educational programs for both properties through promotional materials, media relations and other outreach methods. Develop and prepare informational displays and messaging for key management issues. Plan, develop and evaluate publications, multi-media presentations, displays, program aids, exhibits and other non-personal services.

5% Provide information to the public regarding invasive species identification and control methods / techniques. Locate and identify invasive species on the park properties. Work with volunteers and assist with special events.

5% Keep and maintain accurate records and reports relating to interpretive services provided.

Knowledge Required:

Required Qualifications:
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Basic knowledge of environmental concepts, natural resources, ecology, biology / life sciences, geology / earth sciences, invasive species.
- Basic knowledge of the local flora, fauna, and human history.
- Operation of a personal computer and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree or coursework in natural sciences, education, or a related field.
- Experience researching, planning, and conducting interpretive and educational programs.
- Ability to utilize a variety of presentation techniques and relate to a diverse audience.

You will be required to attend a Department on-boarding / orientation session prior to your scheduled start date at the property. The position runs approximately Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with the possibility of additional hours into the Fall. You must be available to work a varied / flexible schedule, including weekends, evening and holiday hours. The position will include scheduled work shifts and programming at both Potawatomi State Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park. Travel within in each property and to and from each property is required. You must be able to provide your own, reliable transportation. Mileage reimbursement is available, when on work-status. Housing is available at Whitefish Dunes State Park.
