Job Description: Assistant Naturalist Guide - LTE

Naturalists at Havenwoods conduct nature programs for local school classes, day care centers, youth organizations, families, and adults. They assist with developing activities and teaching materials, and perform other tasks related to the operations of a nature center. One of the naturalists will be conducting our children's gardening program during the summer months.

75% Conduct outdoor nature field trips for school classes and youth groups on weekdays. Develop and conduct weekend nature and outdoor skills programs for families and youth organizations. Provide care for captive herps used in the property's education programs. Design and develop interpretive materials, such as Powerpoint programs, interactive displays, and publications. One of the naturalists to be hired will conduct the summer kids' gardening program and maintain the kids' gardens in June through August.

15% Deliver visitor services by providing information about natural history, the property, and programs; selling park stickers; and checking out learning materials for loan. Orient volunteers to Havenwoods, train them in what to do and how to do it safely, and occasionally work with them.

10% Assist with invasive plant control, nature center cleaning and minor maintenance, and grounds clean-up as needed.

Knowledge Required:

Required Qualifications:
- Training in interpretive methods and program planning.
- Experience working with children's groups, families, and adult audiences.
- Degree or coursework in natural resources or natural sciences.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- *For naturalist who leads gardening program - must have strong knowledge and experience with organic vegetable gardening.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior work experience conducting outdoor nature programs.
- Knowledge of native and invasive plant species.
- Skill in developing teaching materials
