Job Description: Research Scientist - LTE

Assist with all aspects of fisheries research conducted at the Science Operations Center, with the scope of research being statewide in nature. Job duties include field work, data collection, data analysis, and writing reports and publications. The job requires office, laboratory, and field work and situations where the incumbent will work in teams and serve as a crew leader.

25% Development of goals to accomplish research objectives and coordinates and leads field and laboratory data collection and management, work planning and workload scheduling, and assessment.

25% Acquires field and laboratory data through various methodologies with general supervision to fulfill objectives of statewide fisheries research projects. Independently collects fish and related physical, chemical, and biological field data and conducts laboratory processing and analysis as necessary. Independently assembles and maintains research databases for analysis and is responsible for Science Operations Center fisheries research data archival and integrations with agency databases.

25% Independently writes programs and utilizes available software to summarize and analyze research data. Interprets, prepares, and presents research results using computer software including various statistical packages, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word. Contributes to the development of project proposals, sampling methodologies, study designs, and technology transfer including the preparation and presentation of research results.

15% Provides field and laboratory oversight and training for seasonal or field staff in conducting surveys, orientation, safety training, and maintenance of equipment. Provides recommendations and technical expertise to management personnel.

10% Participates in field work, data collection, data management, and data analysis for long-term lower Wisconsin River and southeastern Wisconsin wadeable stream fisheries studies with program partners in the Bureau of Fisheries Management.

Knowledge Required:

Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of fish identification, fisheries biology and physiology, fish sampling techniques, statistics, limnology, and ecological modeling.
- Knowledge of and experience in scientific report writing, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations.
- Willingness to work in inclement and variable weather conditions.
- Work-shift flexibility and working weekends/holidays is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with boat trailering, boat operation, electrofishing, various forms of fisheries field sampling techniques, and hydroacoustics.
- Experience in standard fisheries statistical analyses and ecological modeling.
- Experience with various forms of fish age estimation.
- A M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Fisheries or related field
