Job Description: Water Resources Management Specialist LTE

DNR is participating in the National Rivers and Streams Assessment (NRSA) funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Approximately 50 wadeable stream sites located across Wisconsin will be surveyed in 2018. At each site, physical habitat, water chemistry, and biological data will be collected. Survey site locations are randomly-selected and can be significant distances from roadways, requiring heavy equipment to be carried to sampling locations. Workdays can be up to 10 hours long, often in challenging weather and working conditions. A four-person crew will be hired to conduct the survey. The crew will be based in Madison but spend the majority of the work week traveling to sampling sites across the state. Often three days per week require hotel stays distant from Madison. The field crew leader will start approximately around April 2nd, and the three remaining crew members will start in May. Training will occur in mid-May, and field work will begin June 1st and needs to be completed by September 30th.

65% Crew leader will manage the overall field sampling effort and three additional crew members. Duties include planning site visits, prepping field sampling gear, ordering gear and supplies, arranging travel logistics, and managing the field data collection and data management as outlined in the EPA NRSA field operations manual and Quality Assurance Project Plan.

20% Attend EPA field training in mid-May, become familiar with the sampling protocols and equipment. Conduct desktop and field reconnaissance of sampling sites and seek landowner permissions. Delegate tasks among the field crew.

15% Upon completion of the field season, assist with compilation, analysis, and reporting of field data.

Knowledge Required:

Required Qualifications:
- Must be able to work independently with limited supervision, be extremely well organized, have strong communication skills, and work on a team.
- Have very strong interest and knowledge in Limnology, and experience in collecting water resources data.
- Ability to follow field protocols, and accurately measure, record, and manage field data.
- A Wisconsin driver's license and safe driving record is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to use ArcGIS or related software, and GPS equipment to map and navigate to monitoring locations is desired.
- Familiarity with electrofishing equipment and methods, and good fish taxonomic identification skills.
