Job Description: Fisheries Technician - LTE

This position serves as a Fisheries Technician working at the DNR Bark River Fry Hatchery, located in Fort Atkinson, WI. Day-to-day reporting can be to the hatchery in Fort Atkinson, or the Horicon DNR office, whichever is more conducive to the successful applicant. This is a two month, short-term position (approximately February 18-May 1) offering 40 hours/week.

35% Fish Culture: Assist in the collection of adult northern pike and walleye broodstock in the field using fyke nets, electrofishing equipment and other fisheries sampling gear. Fertilize eggs in the field and transport eggs to WDNR Bark River Fry Hatchery. Prepare eggs for incubation in hatching jars. Prepare hatchery for production. Conduct frequent inspections and examine general health and quality of fish for characteristics of disease and maturity. Quantify number of eggs taken by enumeration and determine egg mortality and hatching success. Determine the success of fry hatching by enumeration and record findings. Keep records of all the above data throughout the fry-rearing season for comparison to previous years.

35% Assist team biologists as needed in conducting population assessments on area waterbodies. Conduct fyke net surveys for northern pike and walleye. Accurately record data collected in the field on appropriate field forms following established WDNR protocols. Assist in data entry and assessing and processing fish ageing structures from multiple waterbodies.

10% Operate, maintain and repair fyke nets and other fisheries gear for the fisheries team. Operate boats, outboards, trucks and trailers.

10% Maintain buildings, grounds and equipment: Maintain and repair hatchery building, facilities, and propagation-related equipment such as screens, fish distribution tanks and pumps. Set up, clean and disinfect hatchery gear.

10% Assist in public outreach events including open houses to promote the Bark River Hatchery.

Knowledge Required: Valid Wisconsin driver's license. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions. Occasional night and weekend work required.
