Job Description: FORESTRY SPECIALIST-LTE

This position serves as the Urban Forest Inventory Specialist in the Bureau of Forestry Business Services. Under general supervision, the Urban Forest Inventory Specialist works under the guidance of the Staff and Partner Services Section Chief and Urban and Rural Forest Inventory Analyst within the Bureau of Forestry Business Services. As part of a team and working independently, this position will manage the data from an integrated urban forest assessment program which includes fixed ground plots, remotely sensed canopy data and an aggregation of existing urban tree inventory data to provide urban forest data and analysis to resource managers. The work will include conducting spatial and tabular analyses of remotely sensed urban forest canopy cover, a database of collated urban tree inventories, and a statewide plot-based urban forest inventory. Additional work will involve collecting supplementary data and incorporating those data into existing datasets, creating queries and reports and presenting results to various audiences. This position will also serve as a member of the Urban Forest Assessment Technical Team. This position will be responsible for consultation with numerous internal and external WDNR clients. Occasional travel within the state is required.


40% Implement methodologies for collecting, evaluating and reporting urban forest inventory (UFI) data. * Collect varied municipal urban tree inventory data. * Prepare data to aggregate it into an existing online database. * Design & create queries and reports from the aggregated database. * Analyze the results of database output.

20% Perform spatial analyses using remotely sensed urban tree canopy data.

10% Assist in the management of a continuous UFI based on FIA methodology. Work with agency staff to perform analyses based on those data.

30% Synthesize data from varied urban forest & canopy datasets to spatially analyze, map, write reports, web content & oral presentations based on the datasets.

Knowledge Required: Applicants must have sufficient training & experience to demonstrate that, upon appointment, the skills and knowledge necessary to perform the tasks have been acquired. Examples include: * Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Microsoft Access. * Working knowledge of remotely sensed image classification. * Training in GIS or related field. * Working knowledge of ESRI's ArcGIS technologies including experience with ESRI geo-databases, spatial analyst tools, spatial statistic operations, & other data management tools. * Knowledge of cartographic concepts & the ability to create maps for forestry staff, partners & the citizens of Wisconsin. * Experience working on a project team. * Knowledge of customer service concepts & strategies with strong problem solving skills. * Good organizational skills & ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment. * Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and facilitate group decision making.
