, in the Blue River Watershed, is a 24.19 acre lake that falls in Grant County. This lake is managed for fishing and swimming and is currently not considered impaired.

Source:1972, Surface Water Resources of Grant County,WI:WI-DNR Whites Slough: T8N, R1W, Sec. 3, 4 Surface area = 6.0 acres, S.D.F. - 4.73, maximum depth = 5 feet A fairly long and narrow oxbow lake on the floodplain of the Wisconsin River one mile west of Muscoda. It is subject to flooding by the Wisconsin River which brings in a sport fishery of large and smallmouth bass, northern pike and panfish. Seepage is the major source of water and winterkill is an annual problem due to its shallow depth. One hundred and ninety-one acres of deep marsh wetland surround this slough. Game assets which are found on the slough and in the adjoining wetland include muskrats, mink, beaver, deer, puddle ducks, snipe, and woodcock. Nearby public hunting and fishing grounds provide 0.75 mile of public frontage and a gravel road terminates on the southwestern shore thereby making easy access available.

Wisconsin has over 84,000 miles of streams, 15,000 lakes and milllions of acres of wetlands. Assessing the condition of this vast amount of water is challenging. Waters that do not meet water quality standards are considered impaired and restoration actions are planned and carried out until the water is once again fishable and swimmable

Monitoring the condition of a river, stream, or lake includes gathering physical, chemical, biological, and habitat data. Comprehensive studies often gather all these parameters in great detail, while lighter assessment events will involve sampling physical, chemical and biological data such as macroinvertebrates. Aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish communities integrate watershed or catchment condition, providing great insight into overall ecosystem health. Chemical and habitat parameters tell researchers more about human induced problems including contaminated runoff, point source dischargers, or habitat issues that foster or limit the potential of aquatic communities to thrive in a given area. Whites Slough is located in the Blue River watershed which is 216.19 mi². Land use in the watershed is primarily forest (41.60%), grassland (29.40%) and a mix of agricultural (20.80%) and other uses (8.20%). This watershed has 513.46 stream miles, 416.83 lake acres and 5,825.06 wetland acres.
