Dock Lake, in the Shell Lake and Upper Yellow River Watershed, is a 45.26 acre lake that falls in Washburn County. This lake is managed for fishing and swimming and is currently not considered impaired.

A soft water, seepage lake, it is landlocked and subject to frequent
winterkill conditions because of shallow depths. The present fishery is
probably bluegills, bullheads and minnows. The lake has been used as a
water source in commercial cranberry production. The immediate shoreline
of the lake is upland with mixed hardwoods. The littoral bottom is
mostly sand with a few scattered areas of gravel and muck. The two
islands in the lake are state-owned. The lake's wildlife resource is
limited to a few nesting mallards. In the past, a large number of
northern ducks andgeese used the lake but with increased activity of the
cranberry operation, these flights have greatly diminished. There is no
other private development of the lakeshore. It has no public access and
the shoreline of the two islands 0.22 mile, is the extent of the public

Wisconsin has over 84,000 miles of streams, 15,000 lakes and milllions of acres of wetlands. Assessing the condition of this vast amount of water is challenging. The state's water monitoring program uses a media-based, cross-program approach to analyze water condition. An updated monitoring strategy (2015-2020) is now available. Waters that do not meet water quality standards are considered impaired and restoration actions are planned and carried out until the water is once again fishable and swimmable

Monitoring the condition of a river, stream, or lake includes gathering physical, chemical, biological, and habitat data. Comprehensive studies often gather all these parameters in great detail, while lighter assessment events will involve sampling physical, chemical and biological data such as macroinvertebrates. Aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish communities integrate watershed or catchment condition, providing great insight into overall ecosystem health. Chemical and habitat parameters tell researchers more about human induced problems including contaminated runoff, point source dischargers, or habitat issues that foster or limit the potential of aquatic communities to thrive in a given area. Dock Lake is located in the Shell Lake and Upper Yellow River watershed which is 166.67 mi². Land use in the watershed is primarily forest (56.10%), agricultural (12.10%) and a mix of grassland (11%) and other uses (20.70%). This watershed has 118.54 stream miles, 5,764.04 lake acres and 9,834.60 wetland acres.
