Lower Peshtigo River follow-up general and impairment assessment

Purpose

This project will monitor and evaluate streams in the Lower Peshtigo River Watershed in Marinette and Oconto Counties. Just under 50% of the streams and rivers in this watershed have unknown fish and aquatic life conditions. Two hydropower dams exist on the Peshtigo River system in the watershed and use peaking operation. This watershed is situated in the southern portion of Marinette County and contains a significant amount of agriculture as compared to other watersheds in the County. The Trout and Bundy Creek sub-watershed are within the highly agriculturally dominate portion of the watershed and a significant amount of effort will be devoted to further evaluating conditions within this sub-watershed. The remainder of the watershed consists of agriculture, rural development, forests, wetland, and the urban community of Peshtigo. Basin assessment monitoring was recommended in historic watershed plan recommendations but has never been conducted. Marinette County is seeking to develop a 9-Key Element plan for a HUC-12 sub-watershed or the entire Lower Peshtigo River Watershed. The monitoring will help support and guide the development of the 9-Key Element plan by gathering baseline data and eliminating data gaps. The data will also be used to determine current and potential biological uses and evaluate stream conditions for possible future monitoring for 303(d) or ERW/ORW status, use of information for making management recommendations, updating waterbody and watershed narratives in WATERS and use in watershed planning.

Objective

Biological and habitat surveys were completed at 30 sites in 2014 throughout the Lower Peshtigo River watershed. Total Phosphorous samples were collected at 8 sites by Marinette County volunteers. Following assessment of data, 18 of the 30 sites indicated poor to "low" fair biological IBI rating for fish. 6 additional total phosphorous samples are needed on Trout Creek to verify if listing criteria for TP are met, narrow the confidence interval, and determine if the stream is a candidate for listing on the impaired waters list. Additional monthly TP monitoring will be collected on 7 sites to determine if TP listing criteria is met. The focus of the follow-up monitoring sites within the watershed will be contained within the agriculturally dominant portion of the watershed surrounding Trout and Bundy Creek and west of the Peshtigo Flowage.

Outcome

6 monthly total phosphorous samples will be collected on Trout Creek, Bundy Creek, Sucker Brook, and 5 unnamed Tributaries to the Peshtigo River by a volunteer. District biologists will collect additional biological assessments at 18 stations throughout the watershed to verify biological impairments including 18 macroinvertabrate samples and fish surveys.
