Flambeau River Flowages PCBs Hg 1989 & 1992

Sediments in the flowages on the Flambeau River (a.k.a. North Fork Flambeau River) downstream of Park Falls were tested in 1989 and 1992.

Test results showed high levels of mercury in the first 5 of these flowages. Elevated levels of copper, lead, and zinc were also found. Peak mercury concentrations were found at depth in the sediment core samples, indicating most mercury deposition occurred in the past.

Sediment samples from 7 flowages were collected in April of 2010. More current data will be useful for future management of these contaminated sediments and allow any changes in sediment chemistry in the last 20 years to be identified.
