Lake Monona-Yahara River TWA 2013-14

Purpose

Water staff will conduct Fish IBI sampling, macroinvertebrate sampling, and water chemistry sampling to gather total phosphorus data. The work will be conducted at Nine Springs/ Wingra Creek HUC 12 monitoring. The areas include Nine Springs Creek (804200), Wingra Creek (804700), Un-named (804100)/ (5036092) using standard protocols outlined in WDNR guidance documents.

Objective

TWA sampling is replacing the MI Sites and is the third leg of the TRIAD approach. This initiative is recommended by central office and expected by each stream biologist around the state. Answering management questions will try to address proper classification, use designation, and impairments. Currently, twelve sites have been indentified on five different waterbodies. The waterbodies include: Wingra Creek (804700), Nine Springs Creek (804200), Unnamed (804100), Unnamed (5036092), and Yahara River (798300).

Outcome

The main goal of this project is to address management questions, proper classification, use designation, stream impairments. There is a project that is also being submitted by ISS and Dr. Cory McDonald that will supplement this HUC 12 TWA project. Dr. Cory McDonald is looking at verifying SWAT and Rock River TMDL. Water Chemistry sampling proposed in his project would cover the pore point of this HUC 12. He is also bringing additional funding to the project from ISS.

Study Design

Design will focus on the following work. HUC -12 70900020702. 1. Fish Electrofishing Surveys- conduct appropriate IBI surveys at all wadable stations. 2. Macroinvertebrate Surveys- conduct D-Frame Kick Net samples at all wadable stations, represerved and sent to UWSP. 3. Water Chemistry Sampling- water chemistry grab samples will be collected at all Fish stations. Samples analyzed for TP. The pore point will be sampled as part of a special project that is being submitted by Dr. Cory McDonald as part of Local Needs request.
