ROCK RIVER COALITION, INC: Identifying Restorable Wetlands in Horicon Marsh/Lake Sinnissippi Watershed

Purpose

The Rock River Coalition plans to provide information to wetland restoration practioners that will enable them to increase wetland acreage in the watersheds of the Horicon Marsh and Lake Sinissippi. This will improve the water that enters these systems, particularly if the wetlands are replacing current row crop land use. The information will be developed by refining the DNR\2019s Potentially Restorable Wetland map by using GIS maps to identify single- or dual-ownership restorable wetland basins, and then identifying barriers to restoration. Field inspections will further narrow the candidate properties by finding features that influence restoration success. The project report and list of high potential wetland restoration sites will be shared with Ducks Unlimited, NRCS, Wetland Reserve Program and the Lake Sinissippi Improvement District. The report will also include maps of locations, and a brief narrative describing results of the field evaluation for each property.

The objective of this project was to, in the sub-watersheds draining into Horicon Marsh and Lake Sinissippi, overlay property boundaries onto the PRW map in a Geographic Information System in order to find PRWs that were mostly contained within single properties and would therefore be actually restorable. We then sought to field inspect the PRWs from the nearest public road to confirm their restorability.
