DRIFTLESS AREA LAND CONSERVANCY: Floodplain Lakes Education

Purpose

The Driftless Area Land Conservancy plans to conduct outreach to landowners near floodplain lakes associated with the Wisconsin River located in Sauk County to provide information about groundwater pollution. They will also determine which landowners are amenable to either selling conservation easement or fee title in the form of conservation buffers along the riparian areas to intercept high nitrates and other groundwater pollutants that are impacting the floodplain lakes. Outreach efforts include identifying landowners and contacting them via letters and phone calls with the goal of scheduling visits for discussions on this subject. A list of potential project participants with a map showing potential conservation buffer areas around specific lakes will be included in the final report, which will be shared with DNR, other state Riverway partners, local units of government at committee and/or Town meetings and the public via press release and newsletter articles. This project partners with Friends of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway and the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway Board.
