Powell Marsh Background monitoring

Purpose

We will collect WQ Trend data to determine the quality of water leaving Powell Marsh prior to entering Dead Pike Lake. Are we meeting the aesthetic water quality standard? We will also collect data from three additional locations and compare those results to the quality of water leaving the marsh.

Objective

Gather background water quality data and compare to Powell Marsh outlet. Are conditions similar, or is the marsh discharge of total phosphorus, total Iron and suspended solids much higher? Are monitoring sites similar in aesthetic appearance?

Outcome

Is water quality in Powell Marsh ditch outlet into Dead Pike Lake similar or different than background sites? Are we meeting the aesthetic WQ standard?

Study Design

Tentative Sampling Locations (5 locations total): 1.Main Ditch at Powell Road 2.Deer Path Wetland Outlet (need exact location from Gale Wolf) 3.Unnamed Creek (WBIC 2324600)-crosses under highway 51 and enters Manitowish River 4.Unnamed Creek (WBIC 2325300)-crosses under highway 51 and enters Manitowish River 5.Circle Lily Creek (WBIC 2326400)-crosses under highway 51 and enters Manitowish River Variables: 1.Total Phosphorus 2.Total Iron 3.Total Suspended Solids 4.Clarity (Turbidity Tube) 5.Judge water appearance (Aesthetic standard). Is water orange or tea/tannin color? Include photo documentation. Frequency of Sampling: Samples will be collected once a month (first Tuesday of each month) for one year.
