Landing Blitz 2013

Purpose

The Department of Natural Resources, along with numerous partner organizations (see list below), hosted the fifth annual Landing Blitz. The Blitz, part of the Clean Boats Clean Waters program, ran from Thursday July 4th through Sunday July 7th during the busiest time of the boating season. Throughout the Blitz participants educated boaters on preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species. Participation in the Blitz has grown steadily. Participating lakes grew from 90 in 2011 to over 200 in 2012. This year 168 partner groups covered 288 lakes. In 2010, the Landing Blitz reached 2452 people and 2078 boats. By 2012, those numbers grew to over 39,000 people and nearly 18,000 boats. This year the number of contacts and boats inspected jumped again (see graph below). Due to its popularity, free towels, which were introduced in 2012, were again awarded to boaters found practicing good boat hygiene when they: - Inspect their boat, trailer and equipment for attached plants, animals and mud - Remove any plants, animals and mud - Drain all water from boats, motors and live wells - Never Move live fish away from a landing. The popularity of the towels was described by Diane Schauer, Aquatic Invasive Species coordinator for Calumet County, "Boaters love the towels. It’s also more fun for us when we can give them something they’ll use. Good prompts, goodwill, good all the way around.” To assist local participants in highlighting their efforts, the Department provided these groups with outreach materials and tips on getting their story in the media. These efforts garnered statewide attention for the Landing Blitz (see media links in the righthand sidebar). Lake groups or other organizations wanting to participate in 2014 can contact their local Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator (http://dnr.wi.gov/lakes/invasives/contacts.aspx) or Michael Putnam, 608-267-9868 or michael.putnam@wisconsin.gov.
