Purpose
Through the CBCW program, citizens and staff are trained to be watercraft inspectors - they educate boaters and anglers about aquatic invasive species (AIS) at local boat launches. Inspectors show boaters how and where AIS are most likely to hitch a ride on their watercraft and be transferred to other water bodies. They also perform boat/trailer checks for AIS, distribute informational brochures, and collect and report valuable data on boater behaviors and awareness. All ages are welcome to participate. Through this free program, volunteers are trained to identify and report occurrences of aquatic invasive species (AIS). Workshop attendees will learn AIS life cycles, instructions on how to organize an effective monitoring team; a timeline of where and when to look for AIS; and instructions on what to do if you suspect that you have found an invasive plant or animal. Hands-on training will be provided. Workshop hosts will provide a monitoring kit at no charge (one free kit per lake). Additional kits and supplies helpful in assisting you in the collection and identification of the plants and animals will be available for purchase. These materials are optional, but many volunteers find them useful.
