Large Scale Lake Planning
Since its inception, the Three Lakes Waterfront Association (TLWA), along with its long-time partner, the Town of Three Lakes, has worked to prevent introduction and establishment of aquatic invasive species within the chain of lakes. The groups have approached this sometimes overwhelming task through diligent volunteer monitoring of the chains littoral zone (Adopt-AShoreline) and an annual educational initiative that includes direct contact with lake stakeholders through multiple avenues, such as conducting annual meetings with educational speakers, staffing informational booths and manning the chains many landings with Clean Boats / Clean Waters watercraft inspectors. The association also educates stakeholders through more passive activities, like direct mailings, newsletters and signage at boat landings.
Three Lakes Waterfront Association, Inc. is sponsoring a large scale lake planning grant to study Spirit Lake, in Oneida County. The project will focus on developing a Lake Management Plan (LMP) for Spirit Lake.
Project activities include: 1) Stakeholder participation - stakeholder survey, planning meetings (up to 2), kick-off meeting, wrap-up meeting, news release(s), and newsletter article; 2) Water quality sampling and analysis; 3) Watershed assessment and P load modeling; 4) Fisheries assessment; 5) Shoreline assessment; 6) Professional Dreissena monitoring; 7) Aquatic plant surveys (PI survey, early-season AIS survey, community mapping, and substrate mapping); 8) Data analysis; 9) Volunteer watercraft inspections; 10) Develop LMP.
