UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON: Tolerance of air exposure & its impact on dispersal of aquatic invasive species

Purpose

UW-Madison Center for Limnology is sponsoring an AEPP Research and Demonstration grant, in Vilas County. Missouri State University will be a project partner. The project will focus on studying the tolerance of AIS to extended periods of air exposure. Study results may provide guidance on statewide boat and equipment cleaning and disinfection protocols and policies. Project activities include: 1)Employ graduate and an undergraduate student; 2) Test the tolerance of 11 AIS to air exposure that will be measured across an array of hourly and daily time frames; 3) Public education and outreach \2013 news releases, workshops, presentations (Lakes Convention, scientific meetings, DNR AIS Coordinator meetings, lake associations, others as requested) and written updates and summaries (Lake Connection, Lake Tides, peer-reviewed journals, and others as requested); 4) Develop annual summaries and a final report; 5) Write Graduate Thesis. Project deliverables include: 1) Graduate and undergraduate students; 2) Updated cleaning disinfection and cleaning protocol and policies as necessary; 3) Public education and outreach \2013 informational materials, presentations, media outreach, written summaries and updates; 4) Annual summaries and final report; 5) Graduate Thesis. Specific project conditions: Annual summaries, final report, and Graduate Thesis needs Dept review and approval WDNR Lakes Management Coordinator will be provided with an electronic (pdf or word) and hard copy of annual summaries, final report, thesis, and all education and outreach materials.
