SER_01_CMP12 - Root River Biological Community Monitoring

Conduct biological community monitoring in support of development of the Root River Watershed Restoration Plan, and as Identification, Validation, and Improvement of the 303(d) Impaired Waters List. The fish community at ten sites within the Root River Watershed will be assessed, along with a qualitative fish habitat assessment at each site. Additionally, the macroinvertebrate communities of 40 sites within the Root River Watershed will be sampled. It should be noted that the Root River Watershed has three portions listed on the 303(d). This monitoring will also serve to validate and improve these listing, and identify potential additional listings within the Watershed.

Project Justification: DNR, Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network, Sweet Water Trust, MMSD, and Racine County, as well as other stakeholders, are funding SEWRPC to draft the Root River Watershed Restoration Plan. The aquatic biological community assessment proposed here will be in support of the drafting of the Restoration Plan, and will allow sound planning and the setting of restoration goals.
