Nemadji River Fish Tissue Sampling - NOR_17_11

Determine if a specific fish consumption advisory is needed for the Nemadji River. The adjacent St. Louis River has a fish consumption advisory for Hg and PCBs, and most likely Nemadji would, too. Fish tissue data on the Nemadji, however, has not been obtained since the 1980s. Additionally, contaminants have been found in water column data for the Nemadji River that exceed several water quality standards. Suspected contaminants include Hg, PCBs, dieldrin, DDT,and 2,3,7,8-TCDD. Koppers Creek is a known upstream contaminant source for PAHs and dioxin (including 2,3,7,8-TCDD). This data will help to determine if a specific fish consumption advisory should be issued for the Nemadji River.

Collect several species of adult fish from the Nemadji River for fish tissue contaminants to determine if a specific fish consumption advisory is needed. Samples to be collected by hook and line, electrofishing, or netting methods. We anticipate collection of targeted species (walleye, catfish, and white sucker) can be completed in 1 to 3 days.

Sample sites will be in the lower Nemadji River; sampling will take place by Sept. 2010. The State Lab of Hygiene will complete the anaylsis for fish tissue contaminants, and data will be entered into the fish database. Fish toxicologist will analyze data and make determination if further sampling is necessary in order to conclude whether an advisory should be issued.
