Impaired Waters (303d) Evaluation and Monitoring for Biological Recovery of Newton Creek and Hog Island Inlet after Remediation - NOR_11_CMP11

This project is continued monitoring for a 3-year project, of which this upcoming fiscal year would be year-3 of the project. Last year it was NOR18_10, and the previous year was NOR1_09. This project involves evaluating 303d waters including Newton Creek and Hog Island Inlet which is required for proposing removal of waters from the state's impaired waters list - to complete necessary monitoring as required by EPA.

To determine if Newton Creek (2843650) and Hog Island Inlet (2751220) are meeting their designated or attainable uses (as described by Chapter NR 102) after recent remediation efforts to remove aquatic atoxicity impairments caused by metals, paH's, and petroleum pollutants. Post-monitoring evaluation of the biological recovery of these waterbodies will further determine the overall success of remediation efforts towards substantially improving water quality and whether or not these waterbodies may be removed from the 303(d) list. Sediment monitoring this year will also determine if original impairments still exist.

Newton Creek: Macroinvertebrates: contracted out to LSRI to sample 3 sites, spring and fall, in 2008, 2009, 2010. Sampling complete by December 1 each year. Fish Community: sample 2-3 sites once/yr in 2008, 2009, 2010. To be completed by September 30th each yr with data entry complete by Dec. 31st. Sediment/water quality monitoring: 2 sites, sampled 4 times, plus 2 additional grab samples for sediment monitoring for PAH's, oils and grease, and metals. Hog Island Inlet: Macroinvertebrates: contracted out to LSRI to sample 5-6 sites in 2010. Complete sampling by Sept. 30th each yr. Fish Community: sample 3 sites once/yr by Mini-fyke netting in 2008 and 2010. Electrofish shoreline with mini-boomshocker in 2010. Fish sampling complete by Sept 30th each year with data entry complete by Dec 31st. Macrophyte community: Conduct point-intercept surveys of aquatic plants in 2008 and 2010 by August 31 each yr. Final Report: Write a final report to summarize all findings and to make comparisons with historic data by June 30, 2011. Report will discuss/evaluate the overall biological and physical recovery of Newton Creek and Hog Island Inlet and make recommendations for future management in regards to status on 303d list.
