On the Path to Lake Superior Learning: An Outdoor Classroom in the Superior Municipal Forest
Return to Search
The City of Superior Environmental Services Division (ESD) propose to construct an outdoor classroom in the City of Superior's Municipal Forest. Interpretive signs will be placed near existing benches on the trail & at significant ecological sites. Topics covered by the signs will include history, geology, Great Lakes ecology, pollution, Forest wildlife, and stormwater management. The signs will focus on providing a "sense of place" to visitors by highlighting the Forest's unique location on Lake Superior. A teaching area will compliment the interpretive trail. The teaching area, designed to hold up to 40 students, will be constructed along the trail within view of one of the bays of the St. Louis River. ESD staff will prepare educational units that can be used by leaders who bring groups to the Forest, and ESD staff will periodically conduct their own classes. A public relations campaign to raise awareness about the classroom will highlight the special nature of the Forest, promote tourism, and provide opportunities for further hands-on education.
The City of Superior will construct an outdoor classroom in the Superior Municipal Forest; develop educational materials for use in the outdoor classroom; and prmote both the classroom and the availability of educational materials.
An outdoor classroom with 6 interpretive signs and 1 teaching area; ready-made "Teacher Tool-kits" designed around 6-10 educational topics; 2 informational brochures with photos; a pamphlet providing a self-guided tour of the Outdoor Classroom with companion materials; a project web-page that will provide information about the project; survey results/public input; copies of quarterly reports and project updates at the Lake Superior Partner Team meetings.
