WCR 303d Stream monitoring 2010 - WCR 3_11

Purpose

WCR is submitting a Regional 303d stream monitoring project for FY2011. Streams have been selected for both initial and intense or expanded 303d monitoring. Specially, four streams or stream segments were confirmed to have poor fish IBs last year during initial 303d monitoring and are scheduled for impairment/controllability monitoring this year. Monitoring on these streams will include fish and quantitative habitat surveys, continuous temperature and dissolved oxygen monitoring and macroinvertebrate sampling. The project will also include conducting initial 303d monitoring on eleven streams. Additional biological monitoring is needed for these stream to determine the biotic integrity and overall health. Some streams evaluated with this project are currently on the 303d list but either lack data or have limited data regarding their biological use and potential. Monitoring on these streams will include fish and qualitative habitat surveys, macroinvertebrate sampling and continuous temperature monitoring.

Objective

This project follows guidance outlined in the WISCALM document. The project will help identify stream impairments and confirm which streams will need additional 303d impairment monitoring in the future. Future 303d listing and delisting recommendations will be made based on the outcome of these surveys.

Outcome

Performance Measures: These are milestones that will be reported on in the Division Quarterly Report. Please estimate dates in a manner that encourages success. 1) Number of sample sites associated with the project. Impairment monitoring is planned at an estimated 10 sites on four streams. Initial 303d monitoring is planned at an estimated 25 sites on 11 streams. 2) Number of sampling events associated with project. Generally each stream and site will be visited three times. Sites will be reconned and temperature loggers deployed during the initial visit. Fish and habitat surveys will be completed during the second visit. The third visit will include collecting macroinvertebrate samples and pull continuous temperature loggers. A fourth visit will occur if continuous dissolved oxygen monitoring part of the impairment monitoring. 3) Estimated date when sample collection will be complete. Monitoring will be completed following guidance outlined in WISCALM and follow protocol outlined for each metric. Fish and habitat surveys will be completed during appropriate summer timeframes, continuous temperature loggers will be deployed by early June and left in stream the entire summer sampling period, macroinvetebrate sampling will be completed in fall and continuous dissolved oxygen monitoring will occur during July and August. This period allows for assessment when the potential is greatest for hot low flow periods and may capture events. 4) Estimated date when all data will be entered into appropriate database. Late winter 5) Estimated date when final report will be complete. An impaired waters documentation sheet will be completed if monitoring indicates a stream should be listed or delisted from the 303d list.
