Pike River 303(d) Verification Monitoring SER 2_11

Purpose

A fish community assessment will be conducted at two sampling sites on the Pike River. A macroinvertebrate kick sample will be collected from each sampling site. Quantitative habitat assessments will be conducted at each sampling site. Instantaneous water temperature, DO, pH, Conductivity, transparency tube, and flow will be collected twice at each sampling site.

Objective

Past monitoring suggests that the Pike River may be a candidate for 303(d) listing. However, this data is outdated (older than 5 years) so assessing the biological community of the Pike River and comparing those communities with those of an appropriate reference site from SER Natural Community Reference Site monitoring will serve to suggest possible 303(d) listing.

Outcome

The project outcome will be a document describing the biological community of two sites on the Pike River. The existing biological community data, when combined with water quality monitoring data collected by UW-Parkside and Carthage College under the Citizen-Based Stream Monitoring program, as well as monitoring being done by UW-Milwaukee on the North Branch Pike River, will serve to suggest future resource management opportunities, as well as serve to verify the river's need to be 303(d) listed. Performance Measures: These are milestones that will be reported on in the Division Quarterly Report. Please estimate dates in a manner that encourages success. 1) Number of sample sites associated with the project: 2 2) Number of sampling events associated with project: 3 3) Estimated date when sample collection will be complete: 11/15/2010 4) Estimated date when all data will be entered into appropriate database: 03/15/2011 5) Estimated date when final report will be complete: 06/30/2011
