BLACK EARTH CREEK WATERSHED ASSOCIATION: Engagement for Restoration in Black Earth Creek Watershed

Purpose

Black Earth Creek Watershed Association (BECWA) is sponsoring a project to improve organization effectiveness by undergoing an organizational assessment to determine paths to improve their success in fulfilling their mission. BECWA will conduct outreach activities to educate and engage citizens, residents, and other organizations in the watershed regarding the ecological and recreational value Black Earth Creek offers along with issues that pose a threat to this resource. Specific project activities include: 1) Conduct an Organization Effectiveness Assessment (in cooperation with UW Extension) to develop strategies to improve their organization. 2) Conduct multiple public outreach activities. 3) Revamp website. Projects deliverables include: 1) Meetings between UW Extension and subset of BECWA board and members, stakeholders, and partners to conduct interviews, surveys, collect data, and attend a one-day retreat. 2) Develop a draft 3-year action plan that includes steps, resources, and data evaluation. 3) Write a final plan based on the organization effectiveness assessment. 4) Share results of Organizational Effectiveness Assessment with members 5) Publish and distribute fall and spring BECWA newsletters and reports (both digital and hard-copy format). 6) Install six interpretive signs. 7) Create a 5-minute educational video focusing on the history of Black Earth Creek, current status and threats, and interviews. 8) Sponsor a variety of educational events, open house meetings, and watershed forums for partners, citizens, farmers, and users. 9) Improve website by making it more cost effective, easier to maintain, and improving accessibility.
