SAUK COUNTY LAND CONSERVATION DEPARTMENT: Survey of Lower WI Riverway Floodplain Lakes

Purpose

Sauk County through its Land Conservation Department will sponsor a project to evaluate 13 oxbow lakes in the Sauk County portion of the Wisconsin River in the Lower Wisconsin Riverway. This project will sample water quality and fish, and do a qualitative survey of plants to better identify any unique features. The following project deliverables are expected: 1) collect baseline information on the water quality and biota of oxbow lakes with little or no information; 2) identify base flow watershed boundaries and land uses; 3) identify springs and their potential influence in sustaining the oxbows; and 4) develop management options to assist various governmental entities in their efforts to better understand and protect these resources. A complete report of findings and results will be shared at a public meeting as well as documented in fact sheets and newspaper articles.
