Citizen Based Stream Monitoring
Citizen-Based Stream Monitoring
The Water Action Volunteers Stream Monitoring Program (WAV) is a statewide program in which citizen monitors assess water quality in wadable streams. They collect data for local knowledge and for possible use by DNR and its partners to assist in making management decisions. Goals of the program include educating and empowering citizens to be effective local stewards of the environment, collecting high quality data that can be used for management decisions, and building relationships between DNR staff and citizen monitors. Ultimately, volunteer participation in this project aids DNR staff by allowing for increased capacity to monitor streams. Communities and the DNR can use this water quality information to make decisions that affect the management of streams throughout Wisconsin.
