Mishonagon and Tomahawk Targeted Watershed Assessment, Vilas County

Purpose

The Mishonagon Creek - Tomahawk River HUC 12 (070700010803) is comprised of forests and light residential development in the northern half to heavy development including the cities of Woodruff and Minocqua in the southern part of the watershed. The Vilas County Land and Waters Conservation Department has identified the part of the watershed that lies within it's boundary for a future 9 KeyElemts Plan for protection. Surveys on these streams are more than 15 years old. The Rhinelander Water Resources biologist and LTE will review previous data/files and collect water chemistry, stream habitat and biological information including fish and macroinvertebrates in order to assess conditions within the watershed. In addition to updating DNR information regarding stream resources, the Vilas County Land and Waters Conservation Department will be able to use this information, helping aid them in their decision making process. We also are piggybacking a request by the wastewater program and will be collecting three sulfate samples at three locations on the Tomahawk River at various flows. . The program is interested in sulfate levels out of concern by the Lac du Flambeau tribe regarding possible effects on rice health/abundance.

Objective

Project objective is to characterize the Mishonagon Creek-Tomahawk Watershed and its tributaries and determine the condition of it's riverine water resources. Listed are sites we know -Mishonagon Creek US from Verna Crk mouth (new station TBD after recon) - Mishonagon Creek -(Station 10010143) - Mishonagon Creek - (Station 10012797) -Spring Crk (new station TBD after recon) -Harriet Creek DS Hwy 47 (new station TBD after recon) -Brandy Creek (Station 643616) -Verna Creek - (Station 10016074) -Johnson Creek - (Station 643615) -Unnamed Stream (Ila Cr) - (Station 10051469) -Tomahawk River - (Station 443005) -Tomahawk R (Station 10029416) Sulfate samples will be collected at three locations, one above the Lakeland Sanitary District discharge and two sites TBD DS of the discharge, with one site at the border of the LDF property boundary. These samples will be collected at various flows..

Outcome

There might be 8 sampling sites, possibly 11 after recon in spring. There will be 6 sampling events in FY 16 and 11 in FY 17 Sample Collection dates are April though November 2019. Data will be entered into SWIMS and FHDB by Spring 2020 depending on bug sample result timeline. Final report possible May-June 2020 People responsible for entering data, Jim Klosiewski, Al Wirt and possibly Joe Cunningham

Study Design

8 sites (possibly 11) will be surveyed for fish, qualitative habitat and marcroinvertebrates using standard WDNR sampling protocols. Additional fish surveys may be completed if time allows
