Upper Mississippi River Pool 8 Long Term Resource Monitoring

Purpose

The Upper Mississippi River Pool 8 Long-Term Resource Monitoring Status Report provides a brief summary of fisheries, water quality, and aquatic vegetation data collected in Mississippi River Pool 8. Report summarize datain context with the period of record for Stratified Random Sampling (25 years for fish and water quality, 20 years for aquatic vegetation). A summary of mean historic, daily, annual, and growing-season discharge, as well as spring flood-pulse statistics is also provided as context for understanding the long-term data. Data collection and report development was led by the Wisconsin DNR’s Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) Field Station, a partner in the Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) program.

These reports are designed to provide river managers with a brief overview of conditions in Navigation Pool 8 along with information to help understand conditions compared to previous years; it is not intended to be a comprehensive set of analyses nor in-depth interpretation of findings. Rather, numerous links are contained within the report that will direct the interested reader to online data-retrieval and data-visualization tools that can easily provide the user with additional insights. These links also provide the opportunity to compare data across all UMRR – LTRM study reaches for greater awareness of how conditions or patterns observed in Pool 8 compare to other UMR reaches.

Data collection efforts were completed by the following: Andrew Bartels, Alicia Carhart, Deanne Drake, Kraig Hoff, Calista Holman, John Kalas, and Phillip La fond. The report was authored by Andrew Bartels, Alicia Carhart, Deanne Drake, and John Kalas.

Outcome

The main activity of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Mississippi River Monitoring Field Station at La Crosse is performing standardized monitoring of the upper Mississippi River. Funding comes from the federal Environmental Management Program's Long Term Resource Monitoring element and the Environmental Monitoring and Assesment Program for Great River Ecology (EMAP-GRE). Key river-related resources monitored are fish, water quality, vegetation, land cover/land use, and invertebrates. In addition, Long Term Resource Monitoring Program (LTRM) employees monitor sediments and others.
