Onion River Eastern District TWA 2018

Purpose

Building on NE Lakeshore TMDL monitoring activity on the Onion and Sheboygan Rivers, this new 1-Year Targeted Watershed Assessment will document fish, macroinvertebrate, and growing season Total Phosphorus at eight locations within the Onion River HUC 10. Sampling during 2012 showed TP levels above the standard, with the river listed as impaired for TP from the mouth upstream to the Waldo Millpond. Further sampling will refine this listing, as well as identify possible areas for improvement. The headwaters supports a Class 1 Cold Water fishery, with heavy involvement from the trout fishing community. Additionally, at the request of the Wastewater Program, two locations on the Sheboygan River will be sampled monthly during the growing season to gather background data for wastewater permit reissuance.

Objective

Document the fish and macroinvertebrate community at eight locations in the Onion River HUC 10 (six mainstem and two tributaries). In compliment, assess growing season TP at the biological community sampling sites. As an addendum to the monitoring being completed on the Onion and Sheboygan rivers under the NE Lakeshore TMDL and at the request of the wastewater program, two locations on the Sheboygan River are also proposed for growing season TP monitoring under this project.

Outcome

Onion River HUC 10 Monitoring: Number of sampling sites: 8 Sampling events: 2 recon days, 5 fish sampling days, 1 macroinvertebrate sampling day. 6 Total Phosphorus sampling days. All monitoring will be completed by fall of 2018, with entry into the FH database completed by December 2018. Write-up will be completed in fall of 2019 after receipt of macroinvertebrate data from UWSP. Sheboygan River WW Monitoring WQ sampling will be completed by November 1st, 2018. Data will be entered by Craig Helker by December 2019. Summary report will be drafted by December 2019.

Study Design

Sampling will follow WDNR sampling protocols and mirror those efforts performed on other WDNR TWAs.
