Bostwick Creek TWA 2018 (2021)

Purpose

La Crosse County is developing a 9 Key Element Plan for the Bostwick Creek Watershed (HUC 12: 070400060401). This project will provide data to support their plan, provide an update to past data, and fill data gaps. This project will also allow us to provide baseline data before habitat restoration projects are implemented in the coming years. Camille Bruhn will work with the La Crosse Fisheries unit (Kirk Olson, Kevin Mauel, etc.) and the Eau Claire biologist and field crew (Chris Willger, Mycal Raleigh, etc.) to complete the fish and habitat monitoring. The monitoring will occur in FY18 and FY19.

Objective

The objective of this project is to support the La Crosse County Land Conservation Department with supporting data to develop the 9 Key Element Plan for the Bostwick Creek Watershed. Plans include collecting data to assess the current condition of the resources present in the Bostwick Creek Watershed and to compare current conditions to past data. The La Crosse County Land Conservation Department will be working with Trout Unlimited in 2019 to implement habitat restoration projects. They also hope to apply for and utilize TRM (Targeted Runoff Management) grants to supplement the work with Trout Unlimited. Sites will be sampled throughout the Bostwick Creek Watershed, using ten to twelve sites for assessment. The following WBICs will be included in the sampling efforts:

Outcome

This project supports the efforts of the La Crosse County Land Conservation Department and the WDNR to obtain monitoring information on resources in the Bostwick Creek Watershed. This project will provide data on conditions to evaluate resources in the Bostwick Creek Watershed and allow for comparison to historic data. The data results will be used to supplement the development of the 9 Key Element Plan for the Bostwick Creek Watershed. The data can also be compared to future monitoring after habitat restoration activities have been completed.

Study Design

Water chemistry (specifically total phosphorus monitoring), fish, habitat, and macroinvertebrate data will be collected at each of the selected sites in the Bostwick Creek Watershed. Seven sites were surveyed for fish and quantitative habitat in 2001 and those sites will be re-surveyed in 2018 to observe any changes over time. Additional sites (about 9 additional) will be surveyed with fish and qualitative habitat protocols to get a broader watershed view of conditions.
