Wilson/Big Beaver Creeks TP monitoring to assess implementation

Purpose

Department staff completed watershed assessments during 2016 field season in the Wilson Creek and Big Beaver Creeks Watershed to assess biological integrity and TP growing season concentrations. NRCS selected the Wilson Creek Watershed to implement BMPS to reduce NPS runoff to streams in the watershed. The primary focus of the project is TP reduction. NRCS and County LCD staff goal is to reduce TP and remove streams from 303d list. Dunn County LCD is also working with a Farmer Led Council in the Big Beaver Watershed with a similar goal to reduce NPS runoff and improve water quality. Monitoring changes of TP concentrations in streams is difficult due to legacy issues and annual variability resulting from climate and land management practices. The goal of this monitoring is to collect enough concentration data before implementation of practices to establish the annual variability. Monitoring can continue while practices are being implemented to maintain a continuous record of concentrations. The monitoring will be completed by volunteers and may include farmers in the Watersheds.

Objective

The success of this project depends on successful implementation and understanding the variability on concentrations.

Outcome

TP monitoring will continue for the next several years providing volunteers will continue sample collection. The outcome is to monitoring change in concentrations over time.

Study Design

Growing season TP sampling will be completed at 12 sites in the two watersheds. Samples are generally collected near the mouth of major tributaries with multiple sites on larger streams. The sampling will be completed by volunteers. Diatoms samples will be collected from the 12 growing season TP sites. Diatom samples were collected in 2016 and the 2017 data will be used to assess the variability in diatom communities. Data collected in 2016 documented baseline conditions and sampling the next few years will evaluate the annual variability while NRCS and Counties begin implementing practices. The success of the project will depend on the success of implementing enough practices to reduce NPS runoff and reduce TP concentrations.
