Fenwood Creek TWA 2017-2019(b)

Purpose

The Fenwood HUC12 (070700021602) Watershed is part of the Big Eau Pleine Watershed in Marathon County. This watershed has received much attention the past several years. The Department monitored and estimated TP and suspended sediment loads from the watershed to the Big Eau Pleine Flowage.station near the mouth as part of the larger Big Eau Pleine and Wisconsin River TMDL. The Big Eau Pleine Lake Association applied for a River Grant and in cooperation with Marathon County LCD continued the load monitoring for an additional year and networked with farmers and student for area High School. Recently, Marathon county has submitted a Nine Key Element Plan and received a large scale TRM grant to implement NPS control practices in the Watershed. Limited biological information is available for streams in the watershed and this project proposes to collect fish, chemical and qualitative habitat information from watershed streams. Macroinvertebrate samples were collected at 10 sites in 2017. This is a section 319 project.

Objective

This project will collect biological and habitat data that is lacking on watershed streams. The data will be used to assess overall stream health and provide baseline conditions prior to the implementation of NPS practices. The project provides support to Marathon LCD and Lake Association who have promoted monitoring and implementation efforts in the watershed. Growing season TP sampling will be completed at three locations in the watershed to establish baseline conditions. Future growing season sampling will help establish annual variability.

Outcome

A summary report will be completed when all data is entered and received. The study will be used to assess overall stream health and provide baseline conditions prior to the implementation of NPS practices in a Nine Key Element Plan in the coming years.

Study Design

Fishery and qualitative habitat surveys will be completed at 10 sites in the watershed. Surveys will be completed on Fenwood, Rocky Branch and unnamed streams. Growing season TP and diatom sampling will be completed at three locations in the watershed including the pour point (Fenwood Creek at STH 153), mouth of Rocky Branch and Fenwood Creek upstream confluence Rocky Branch. Growing season samples will only be collected if volunteers are available for sampling. Single grab TP samples will be collected near the mouth of other major tributaries.
