BAYFIELD COUNTY: Bayfield County Aquatic Invasive Species Project

Purpose

Bayfield County is sponsoring a multi-year countywide AIS project/position to implement their updated AIS Strategic Plan. The Coordinator will spend the majority of time/effort on/with Lake Superior, its tributaries, and the associated communities and recreational users. The project will expand the coordinator roles and responsibilities to include serving as the lead for local rapid response efforts. Project deliverables include the results of the monitoring, planning, control assistance, and education/outreach as described in the application, including all GIS-related data and files, and a project summary report. Special Conditions: WDNR\2019s Aquatic Plant Management in Wisconsin guidance should be followed for point-intercept survey monitoring and aquatic plant management plan development. The Department may specify other AIS monitoring methods. The specific objectives, metrics, and deliverables for the listed activities are included in the application and supporting materials, and this scope is not intended to replace or supersede those documents. The Department may request quarterly progress reports.

This resolution was passed by the Bayfield County AIS Committee in support of asking the County Executive and Personnel Committees and the County Board to create a full- or half-time Lake Conservation Specialist Position. While our efforts to petition for creating the position did not pay dividends right away, we were able to secure funding for it. We will continue trying.
The Bayfield County AIS Committee passed this resolution in support of pursuing DNR AEPP funds. Such a grant keeps an AIS Coordinator funded full time here to run the Bayfield County AIS Project.

Marisa Ulman was the boat driver and tracker of GPS points while we moved around Lake Owen clipping off yellow iris flowers and seed capsules. She provided those data to me 1-2 months later once it was compiled, and I thank her for everything she did on this project. I also thank Emma Holtan for assisting both of us when needed and clipping many yellow iris plants.

Two Northland Student scientists and I went out on the lake using these maps as a guide so we could cut flowers and seed capsules.
