FRIENDS OF THE LOWER WI RIVERWAY (FLOW): Evaluation of Norton Slough Buffers

Purpose

The Friends of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway is sponsoring a project to evaluate water quality from Jones and Norton Sloughs, and from wells established up- and down-gradient of a conservation buffer located on Jones Slough. These data will be evaluated to determine effectiveness of the buffer, and to help guide future management decisions regarding buffers in this area. Project final deliverables include: A final report will summarize evaluation of the water quality data. All raw data will be included or entered into the swims database. Specific project activities include: Water quality data will be collected from Jones and Norton Sloughs, and area wells, as described in the application. The data will be evaluated, and a report produced and shared with partners and media outlets. Special Conditions: Not applicable. This scope summarizes the project detail provided in the application and does not negate tasks/deliverables described therein. Data, records, and reports, including GIS-based maps, and digital images, must be submitted to the Department in a format specified by the regional Lake Biologist. If consultant is to provide final report, it is recommended that Grantee provide DNR Lake Coordinator with a draft for comment on report adequacy prior to making final payment to the consultant. This report completes a five-year effort documenting the underlying causes for the recent water quality decline in Lower Wisconsin River oxbow lakes. We also investigated the potential use of conservation buffers to reduce groundwater nitrate levels before reaching oxbow lakes in the Town of Spring Green, Sauk County Wisconsin.
