Lake St. Croix Tributary TWA 2016-2017

Purpose

The Lake St. Croix TMDL and Implementation Plan is supported by State and Federal Agencies in Minnesota and Wisconsin as well as other partners. Recent activities include the completion of Basin wide SWAT modeling to more accurately reflect pollutant loading areas in the watershed. Implementation monitoring is occurring in Minnesota including on the St. Croix River and Lake St. Croix. At a recent meeting, the lack of load monitoring on major tributaries in Wisconsin was identified as a gap in implementation monitoring. The tributaries include the Kinnickinnic River, Willow River and Apple River. Continuous streamflow is currently gaged on the Apple and Kinnickinnic Rivers so the addition of monthly TP and suspended solids will allow for load estimation to document future trends as implementation occurs. The existing gage on the Willow River is currently not operational however it appears funding will be available to restart the gage. This is a section 319 funded project.

Objective

CBM will try and identify volunteers to collect year round monthly water chemistry samples. If volunteers cannot be found Department LTE or FTE staff will consider collecting samples especially if sampling can be completed during other monitoring activities. The samples will be analyzed for total phosphorus and suspended solids. The data will be provided to project partners to calculate loads and will be used to assess project effectiveness.

Study Design

Monthly samples will be collected from the Kinnickinnic River and Apple River by volunteers or Department staff and be shipped to the SLOH for total phosphorus and suspended solid analysis. Data will be provided to the ST. Croix Monitoring and implementation teams who will use this information along with other data to assess implementation of the TMDL.
