Big Beaver Creek TWA 2016

Purpose

Big Beaver Creek Watershed is a HUC 12 Watershed and the Vance Creek HUC 12 Watershed are within the 319 eligible Red Cedar River Basin TMDL/9 Key element plan Watershed. According to Dunn County farmer led council exists in both HUC 12s and data collected will be used to support the groups efforts. Data collected will be used to evaluate stream biological, physical and chemical conditions and provide a baseline to evaluate future BMP implementation. Data will also be used to make impairment decisions.

Outcome

Data will be used to document existing conditions, establish a baseline for future BMP evaluation and determine if impairments exist.

Study Design

Fishery and qualitative habitat surveys will be completed at eight sites to document existing conditions in Big Beaver, Little Beaver Creeks and several unnamed tributaries. Macroinvertebrate samples will be collected from eight sites during the fall. Biological and habitat data will not be collected from sties in the Vance Creek HUC 12 due the lack of staff time to complete the monitoring. Sign of Success monitoring will be completed on streams where BMPs are planned for riparian areas in both HUC 12s. Monitoring at these sites will likely include fishery and quantitative habitat surveys. Growing season total phosphorus sampling will be completed at three sites to document existing conditions in the Big Beaver HUC 12. Growing season TP sampling will be completed at four sites in the Vance Creek Watershed. The CBM program will be contacted to locate volunteers for the sampling. Data will be assessed to make 303d determinations and establish a baseline for future BMP evaluation. DNI sampling will also be completed at all seven TP sites to document existing conditions and establish a baseline for future evaluation monitoring of TP reductions. TP and dissolved phosphorus monitoring will be completed at all seven sites in January and February to document winter baseflow concentrations. Some streams in the Red Cedar basin have high TP concentrations year round. A portion of the concentration may be from groundwater or geologic deposits and this monitoring will help assess if this is occurring in these streams.
