Sugar Creek TWA [Section 319][HUC10] 2016

Purpose

This is a CWA Section 319 funded project to complete evaluation monitoring on the HUC 10- Sugar Creek Watershed which includes 4 HUC 12 Watersheds. We propose to monitor 12-14 sites on various streams and monitor 1 lakes- In June, July & August.

Objective

This project will be evaluating a Clean Water Act Section 319 Nine Key Element Watershed. The watershed is Sugar Creek it consists of 4 HUC 12's (071200060401-404) they range in size from 6600 acres to 18300 acres. I will only be monitoring in 3 of the 4 HUC 12 watersheds. Major Waterbodies in the monitored watershed include: Sugar Creek, Baker Creek, Spring Brook & Lake Wandweaga. I will be choosing sites with historical data collection as well as some new sites on waterways to gather data in areas of need. The number of fish stations for IBI's will be 12-14 the number of macroinvertebrate sites will be 12-14, number of DNI samples will be 3, number of qualitative habitat sites will be 12-14. Water chemistry samples will be collected at 12-14 sites including of 3 sites at 6 monthly samples. One lake site will have data collection June, July and August.

Outcome

Project will focus on Sugar Creek Watershed Evaluation. Prior to 1997, Department staff conducted the monitoring of Nonpoint source control plan for the Honey & Sugar Creek Priority Watershed Project This was a large scale priority watershed project focusing on NPS control. Report will be generated summarizing our findings and evaluation the watershed water quality.

Study Design

Fish IBI surveys: (COLD, WARM, and COOL) will be completed at 12-14 stations May 15 through Sept 15. Data entered into the statewide FH database. Fisheries will also be conduction a canoe survey of Sugar Creek and its tributaries this summer to evaluate if anymore cold water tributaries occur in the watershed. I will be coordinating effort with fisheries Biologist Luke Roefler on these projects. Macroinvertebrate samples: will be collected at 12-14locations, these will be collected during the fall period Sept 15 through Oct 31. Diatoms: will be collected at 3 locations during the summer of 2016. Protocols will be consistent with those outlined by ISS. Qualitative Habitat Surveys: will be collected at 12-14 locations to be completed the same day as the fishery surveys. Water Chemistry Samples: will be collected at 12-14 stations by possibly be a CBSM or DNR Staff
