Fish Tumor Assessment

Purpose

Collection of white suckers to verify that tumor rate meets BUI target or is in recovery

Objective

A thorough investigation of the prevalence of fish tumors in the Sheboygan AOC occurred in 2012 and found an elevated rate of tumor incidence relative to the target level of 5%. A reference site comparison sampling effort was undertaken in 2013. Results from the reference site comparison are pending. If the reference site tumor incidence rate is significantly lower than the Sheboygan AOC rate, given appropriate adjustment for age distribution and relative residency, another effort to document the tumor rate in the Sheboygan AOC should occur in 2017. Substantial remediation occurred in the Sheboygan AOC in 2012 and the tumor incidence rate should be markedly lower as a result once fish experience improved conditions for a period of time.
