Wildlife Consumption Assessment

Purpose

Collection of resident waterfowl and analysis for PCBs and other contaminants to verify ecological response post-remediation

Objective

Wildlife Health staff will evaluate and interpret sample results from the WSLH. Results for each contaminant will be compared with the associated critical advisory concentration in food to determine if consumption advisories could be repealed or new advisories are warranted. This process will include consultation with the Department of Health Services (DHS) on the interpretation of results

Outcome

Inform BUI: Fish and Wildlife Consumption Advisory

Study Design

We will focus on collecting samples from waterfowl species which already have an existing consumption advisory. We will collect samples from resident mallards along the Sheboygan River as well as scaup from Sheboygan harbor. In addition, we will attempt to collect samples from resident Canada geese and scaup along the Sheboygan River.
