Howards Bay Sediment Sampling 2014

Purpose

Howards Bay is in the St Louis River Area of Concern (AOC) and is identified as a priority area for remedial action in the 2103 Remedial Action Plan Update for the AOC (Limnotech 2013). The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) conducted sediment sampling at Howards Bay in Superior, Wisconsin on August 18, 2014. WDNR conducted this investigation with assistance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO) Research Vessel (R/V) Mudpuppy II. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) cooperated with drafting of the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP).

Objective

The 2014 sampling is the seventh survey of sediment quality in Howards Bay. The Howards Bay sediment surveys were conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the WDNR during the following years: a. WDNR 1993 b. EPA/Mudpuppy 1994 c. WDNR 2002 d. WDNR 2007 e. EPA Legacy 2010 which was reported in 2012 by Weston. f. WDNR 2013 The 2014 sampling design was targeted to address data gaps existing from previous studies.
